HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, May 19, is Spencer Nichols, who helped create kits filled with much-needed supplies for the homeless in Huntington Beach.

"They're just in different circumstances, and so even though they don't have a house necessarily or maybe even the supplies that they need to get a house, they're still people and we should treat them like people," he said.

The high school freshman started the kits as part of an Eagle Scout project, but he took the initiative to try and reach more people. His goal is to create at least 100 more kits.

He said he went out to different companies asking for monetary and supply donations to create more of the bags.

Huntington Beach police officers who work with Spencer said they appreciate his caring attitude.

"A lot of kids his age are worrying about themselves and here he is creating all these bags trying to help other people. It's nice to have that," Officer Joe Schloss said.

It took lots of time and energy to get the bags together. But Spencer said the best part is getting to personally hand out the items to the homeless.

"At the service day, we personally handed out about 50 of them. So it's kind of nice just to hand them out personally and see their reactions," he said.
