Maine greets gay marriage with midnight weddings

PORTLAND, Maine

Donna Galluzzo and Lisa Gorney exchanged wedding vows Saturday as Maine's voter approved law allowing same sex marriage went into effect at midnight.

"We're paving the way for people to go after us. I think it's just amazing. It's freeing. It's what's right," an emotionally drained Gorney said after their ceremony in front of City Hall.

Voters in Maine, Maryland, and Washington state passed the law allowing same sex marriage in November. The law is already in effect in Washington state and goes into effect in Maryland on Tuesday, the first day of 2013.
