LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It's the first day of school for 550,000 Los Angeles Unified School District students who started classes on Tuesday.

More than 900 schools and 30,000 classrooms opened their doors to eager students across the LAUSD, the second largest school district in the nation.

According to the LAUSD superintendent, there are some staffing improvements to start this school year. Students will see more nurses, counselors and librarians on campuses. Also, every classroom will have a permanent teacher in place, not a substitute.

It's also a big day for the Los Angeles School Police Department, whose officers are out on full force on campuses across the district to keep students safe.
