WEST HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's cruiser slammed into two male pedestrians Thursday night after colliding with a second vehicle, killing one man and injuring a second.

The collision occurred at about 11 p.m. in the 8800 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, less than one block away from the West Hollywood Station.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the sheriff's deputies had their lights and sirens on and were responding to a felony spousal assault call when they collided with a second vehicle.

The impact of the crash caused the sheriff's deputy behind the wheel of the cruiser to lose control, drive up over the curb and hit two pedestrians who were walking on the sidewalk. The cruiser then hit a light pole and a tree.

One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead following the collision, and the other was listed in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.

The deputy behind the wheel of the cruiser was trapped for some time before crews were able to free him, Cmdr. Keith Swensson said.

The two sheriff's deputies were hospitalized in stable condition.

Santa Monica Boulevard was temporarily closed from San Vicente Boulevard to Hancock Avenue.

It's been a tough few days for the sheriff's department. On Thursday, L.A. County Deputy Brandon Arce was killed in a head-on collision near Castaic while on his way to work.

The latest collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
