Man fatally shot in Pacoima after argument; suspect caught

PACOIMA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 35-year-old man was killed after an argument at a Pacoima home escalated into a shooting on Monday, Los Angeles police said.

LAPD received a call about the incident shortly before 10:45 a.m. Police said there was an argument between the suspect and victim at a home in the 13000 block of Montford Street.

According to investigators, the suspect shot the victim and fled the scene in a burgundy car.

The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, but he later died around 1:30 p.m. His father identified him as Jason Newman, a father and electrician's apprentice who worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The suspect, who was not publicly identified, was detained along with two other individuals on Foothill Boulevard near Osborne Street.

Investigators said the incident does not appear to be gang related. A clear motive remains unknown.

"It appeared to be a personal nature," said Lt. Michael Kozak of the Los Angeles Police Department. "It didn't seem to have anything other than some disrespect, or perceived disrespect, on the suspect's part, which led to him confronting the victim."

The victim was not armed at the time of the shooting. Police were still searching the suspect's vehicle for a weapon.

Authorities said the victim did not live in the home where he was shot, but he visited often. Newman is survived by his 4-year-old daughter, according to his father.
