A bright meteor was spotted shooting across the Southern California skies Thursday evening, sparking reactions on social media and even stopping traffic.

The object, described as a bright blue-green streak of light, was seen around 8:30 p.m. across Southern California skies down to San Diego.

Dr. Ed Krupp, director at the Griffith Observatory, said meteors pass through the sky every night, but every once in a while they end up being brighter than usual.

He didn't think this one was from the Perseid shower, which peaks at Aug. 11-12 every year but typically would not be seen that early in the evening.

"My suspicion is that it was just a bright meteor," Krupp said.

"It's always a good thing when people get to wish upon a star," he added.
