Rain causes muddy runoff in Duarte burn area

DUARTE, Calif. (KABC) -- Steady rain caused muddy runoff to flow down hillsides in Duarte Monday morning, raising concerns for residents living in the burn area.

K-rails were set up to catch and divert the runoff. Fortunately, no homes were damaged.

When heavy rain hit the area several weeks ago, similar muddy runoff carried some cars and trash cans down the streets.

There was no such damage on Monday, but just to be sure, the city closed the roads to parking.

Hillsides in the area were left bare due to wildfires, making them vulnerable to debris and mud flows during rain storms.

In addition to Duarte, resident in the Santa Clarita also kept their eyes on the hillsides, hoping the wet weather doesn't trigger mudslides.

Residents in the San Canyon burn areas kept a watchful eye on the hillsides during the storm.

The Sand Canyon Fire left many of the mountains around the Antelope Valley barren and vulnerable to movement.

Public works crews said the latest round of rain did not cause any more movement on the hillsides.

The storm system dropped the heaviest rain early Monday morning, but the rain eventually thinned out as the storm moved down to Orange County.

Some light rain is expected to hit SoCal again Tuesday morning.
