DUARTE, Calif. (KABC) -- A massive cleanup effort is underway in Duarte after the Friday rains brought a wall of mud pouring down from the nearby fire-scarred hillsides.

Homeowners and work crews have been digging out after up to five inches of mud coated the streets.

"It's a mess, because we can't get to our vehicles, we can't get to our mailboxes, we lost our trash cans. They got swept down the street," said Duarte resident Roger Giosso.

But residents say it could have been a lot worse: Nobody was injured and no homes were damaged, though a few cars were damaged when they were caught up in the mud flows.

The installation of K-rails a few months ago helped limit the damage, residents say.
