HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) -- Two people were found dead after a house fire erupted in the community of Oak Hills near Hesperia Sunday morning.

The blaze occurred at about 5 a.m. near Cataba Street and Palm Avenue, according to San Bernardino Fire Department Fire Chief Mark Hartwig.

Two residents, who were alerted by smoke detectors and were able to safely evacuate the home, told police two family members, one of whom was bedridden, were still inside.

When authorities arrived, both victims were found dead in a room where the fire originated, according to the LAFD.

A neighbor near the scene told Eyewitness News that the two victims were a mother and son and said the male victim ran inside the home to try and save his 94-year-old mother.

The fire was declared under control within 20 minutes. Damage from the blaze is estimated at $100,000 and two adults had to be displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
