2 suspects killed in officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Two suspects were killed and two others taken into custody after an officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana on Thursday.

Santa Ana police said they responded to a burglary call in the 11000 block of East 4th Street. When officers arrived they confronted four suspects.

Details of what led up to the shooting have not been released, but police confirmed two suspects were killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Two other suspects were taken into custody and at least one gun belonging to a suspect was recovered at the scene, according to officials.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured. East 4th Street was shut down as detectives investigated the shooting scene.

This was the second officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana in two days.

A suspect and officer were injured during an officer-involved shooting in the area of McFadden Avenue and Sullivan Street on Wednesday.

In the shooting on Wednesday, Santa Ana police said gang units were out doing "proactive enforcement activities" when they made contact with the suspect and a gun fight ensued.

The officer was grazed by a bullet. Officials said the suspect that shot the officer was a documented gang member.

"We're seeing more guns. We're seeing more robberies. We're seeing more gangsters carrying guns and not afraid to use them," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna with the Santa Ana Police Department said on Thursday.

To date, Santa Ana police said there have been more than 50 shootings in the city in 2016. Most of those have been gang-related, according to officials.

ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Greg Lee was granted exclusive access to a Santa Ana police probation sweep targeted toward gangs back in January.

At the time of the report, the Santa Ana Police Department Gang Unit said because of the uptick in gang activity, it planned to utilize operations like the sweep more often than in past years.
