Authorities said four student pedestrians were injured after a car struck a light pole in front of Ayala High School in Chino Hills.

CHINO HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- A car crash in front of a high school in Chino Hills sent two people to the hospital on Thursday, including a student pedestrian, according to authorities.

Chino Valley Fire District said the crash happened in front of Ayala High School on Peyton Drive at about 2:25 p.m.

According to officials, a vehicle hit a light pole, spun and hit a another vehicle. The vehicle that crashed into the light pole caught fire.

"We're still investigating. There's a number of possibilities, anything from a medical incident to potentially a DUI investigation involving drugs and or alcohol. We're also looking at speed as a factor," Sgt. Phil Dupper with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

Fire officials said the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the light pole suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

A 17-year-old male student pedestrian was struck by the car and suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the hosptial, fire officials stated.

Three other student pedestrians suffered minor injuries from shrapnel off of the light pole and the driver of the second vehicle was not injured, according to officials.

Dupper said if the light pole had not been there, all four students would've been struck by the vehicle and could've have been killed instantly.

Peyton Drive was closed in both directions from Boys Republic to Bulldog drives.
