LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A homicide investigation was underway Monday night after the body of a woman was found inside a residence in Windsor Square.

Officers were called to the 100 block of North Beachwood Drive near First Street shortly before 7:30 p.m. Firefighters first made the discovery. Based on what they saw inside the home, they called police.

"From what their observations were inside the location, they determined that it was conducive to a criminal investigation," said LAPD Capt. Howard Leslie. "The officers cleared the location to make it safe, and their observations were also conducive to a criminal investigation."

Leslie said he was not sure who made the call to firefighters.

Officers said they believe the woman was murdered. Police did not immediately say how she was killed.

The woman was in her 80s and lived alone, authorities said.
