SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Crews battled a wildfire that erupted in Simi Valley on Wednesday.

The fire erupted at about 5:30 p.m. in the Wood Ranch area of Simi Valley and covered about 40 acres of land.

The Ventura County Fire Department said no structures were threatened, near Bannister Way and Wood Ranch Parkway, but the potential for the fire to grow was possible.

While the fire was put out late Wednesday evening, the fire department said 100 firefighters remained at the scene overnight monitoring for hot spots.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department assisted at the scene as well.

Officials had to call in three additional brush fire engines because of the difficultly to access the fire.

Crews battled the fire from both the air and ground as winds blew between 5 and 10 mph.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
