'Shoemaker Fire' burns in Angeles National Forest above Glendora

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST (KABC) -- A brush fire erupted north of Heaton Flats in Angeles National Forest Thursday afternoon, scorching at least 70 acres.

The fire was 5 percent contained. Flames had been burning uphill in heavy brush over steep terrain. The fire was 5 percent contained at 9 p.m.

One L.A. County firefighter was hoisted out of the area by a helicopter for heat exhaustion at about 4:30 p.m. and taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora. An injured Forest Service firefighter was able to hike out of the area.

A staging area was located at East Fork and Glendora Mountain roads for incoming firefighting units.

According to the Angeles National Forest Fire Department, 10 engines and one hand crew were on the scene. Five helicopters and four air-tankers were part of the firefighting response.

Los Angeles County Fire and Cal Fire departments were working with the Angeles National Forest Fire Department.

Aircraft were dropping water and Phos-Chek on flames.

ROAD CLOSURES:

Glendora Mountain Road has been closed at the northern boundary of the city of Glendora.

From Azusa, Highway 39 is closed at Old San Gabriel Canyon Road. Mountain Cove residents in the Azusa area will be allowed into the area with identification.
