LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles City firefighters were battling a large blaze at a recycling yard in Harbor Gateway on Saturday.

LAFD initially said on Twitter the fire happened around 10:17 a.m. in the 20300 block of South Normandie Avenue but later gave an adjacent address in the 20800 block of South Denker Avenue.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Carson Station officials urged the public to temporarily avoid the area of Torrance Boulevard and Normandie Avenue.

At around 1:50 p.m., LAFD officials said the fire was contained, but it was not yet declared an official knockdown. Crews were expected to remain on the scene indefinitely until the blaze was fully extinguished, according to LAFD officials.

The cause of the fire was not known.

Numerous nearby residents reported seeing large plumes of heavy black smoke from surrounding areas.
