Homeowner Kills Robber Who Responded to Craigslist Ad, Cops Say

A Colorado homeowner opened fire on two men who responded to a Craigslist "for sale" ad and then tried to rob him, killing one of the suspects as he tried to drive away in the victim's car, authorities said.

But it has not yet been determined if the homeowner will face charges in the case, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney.

After posting the ad, the homeowner thought he was meeting potential buyers at his home in Jefferson County Sunday morning, police said.

But the suspects tied him up and held him at gunpoint while they allegedly stole his car keys, according to cops.

According to Jacki Kelley, a rep for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the suspects left the home after taking the keys, but the homeowner was able to free himself, grab a handgun and confront the men outside his home.

One suspect was already inside the victim's car and allegedly trying to steal it, police said. The homeowner, who has not been identified, fired several shots at the suspect inside his car and the other man who was fleeing in a gold Mustang.

The homeowner struck the suspect in the stolen car, which rolled into a neighbor's front yard, according to police. The suspect was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later.

Kelley said the homeowner, along with his wife who was in the home but unaware of what was happening, was questioned at length Sunday afternoon; the couple is no longer being held by authorities.

It was unclear if the homeowner was injured.

Kelley said the Mustang was found nearly 20 miles away in Federal Heights earlier this morning, but the second suspect is still at large.
