LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Hundreds of LAPD officers on Monday wore a mourning band across their badge in honor of the two NYPD officers who were murdered in Brooklyn.
"We recognize that now is a tough time to be a police officer," said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith.
Smith says LAPD officers are being reminded to remain vigilant.
"So we're asking our officers to remember the good tactics that they were trained in and that they're supposed to be using every day. Keep an eye on each other, they take care of each other out there and just be extra careful," he said.
The same reminders went out to members of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
"We're briefing it at every patrol station. We're also reemphasizing the importance of our personnel to be aware of their surroundings, especially during a call," said Nishida.
Meanwhile, outside of LAPD headquarters, a small group of demonstrators used chalk to write the names of people who have been killed in local police shootings.
"We're out here for a system that's broken. We want the system to be fixed.
KeYon Wilson says he doesn't want what happened in New York to distract others from the allegations of abuse being made against police in Los Angeles and elsewhere.
"Everybody gets the wrong perception of these protesters. We're not out here for blood. We're out here for change," said Wilson.
A small group of demonstrators who appeared outside LAPD headquarters on Monday said they will continue to be present until the LAPD releases the autopsy report for Ezell Ford, who was killed by LAPD officers in August. The report is expected to be out before the end of the year.
