LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A Long Beach police officer was shot and suffered non-life threatening injuries after an encounter with a suspect at an apartment complex Sunday. An investigation was underway.
Officers were called to the apartment complex at Artesia Boulevard and Orizaba Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. Upon arrival, a man opened fire on the officers, who returned fire and struck the suspect. It was not immediately known how many officers shot at the suspect or how many shots were fired.
The suspect was reported in stable condition.
Several hours later, investigators could still be seen at scene of the two-story building.
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were aiding Long Beach police in the investigation.
At about 10:50 p.m., the Long Beach Police Officers Association tweeted about the shooting: "Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated."
It remains unknown why the suspect opened fire on the officers. Those who live in the apartment complex told Eyewitness News that the suspect and his family are residents in the building.
