Carjack suspect leads chase through 7 cities
A carjacking suspect led police on a chase spanning seven Orange County cities on Friday. Charges are pending.

FULLERTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A carjacking suspect was taken into custody in a Yorba Linda neighborhood after leading police on a dangerously wild chase through seven Orange County cities Friday night.

La Habra police said it all began when suspect Gerald Terveer, 47, rear-ended a woman parked in a Ford Taurus on Lambert Road and Rosecrest Avenue in La Habra.

Police said Terveer ordered the woman to get out of the car. He then got in and sped off.

La Habra police officers began pursuing the suspect from La Habra into Fullerton. The suspect drove through residential areas and through a shopping center parking lot, then onto a sidewalk for about a block. The suspect also drove the wrong way down one street before getting onto the southbound 57 Freeway, then transitioning to the eastbound 91.

The driver exited the freeway and drove through a residential area of Anaheim, continuing on the wrong side of the road several times, then drove onto the westbound 91 Freeway. After several miles, the car entered the off-ramp lane, then swerved back onto the freeway suddenly, becoming briefly airborne, landing in brush off the freeway shoulder before getting back into westbound lanes. Farther along the freeway, the suspect exited Kraemer southbound.

The suspect drove through a construction zone in Orange, then through a construction barricade. The chase then proceeded to Yorba Linda residential streets.

As the sun set and streets became dark, the suspect was driving against traffic without headlights.

In a dramatic ending to the chase, the suspect drove into a cul-de-sac and became blocked by a police car. Officers emerged with guns drawn, but the driver sped into reverse and tried to drive away, passing two other police cars. He backed into a tree on the front lawn of a house before another police car smashed into his car, stopping it on the grass. The driver exited the vehicle surrounded by about 10 officers, who placed the man in custody.

Multiple charges are pending against Terveer, police said. The woman who was carjacked was not hurt.
