Recreation board votes to halt Runyon Canyon Park basketball courts project

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners voted to halt a basketball court project at Runyon Canyon Park on Wednesday.

In April, residents filed a lawsuit to block the construction of basketball courts and a retaining wall at the park amid fears that noise would echo through the canyon, among other issues.

Neighbors in the area also argued that the city did not follow proper procedures to approve the project and did not adequately notify them.

The project, which would replace tennis courts more than 80 years old, was created by a private donor called Pink Dolphin, a Los Angeles-based street-wear company.

Because the board chose to stop construction, the city will have to pay the owner the cost to date, which is about $210,000. The project was first approved in November.
