Santa Ana shooting prompts lockdown of 2 schools

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Sepulveda Elementary and Mater Dei High schools were locked down for about two hours due to a shooting on the 1400 block of South Doreen Way in Santa Ana Thursday afternoon.

One person was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound after a shooting on the 1400 block of South Doreen Way in Santa Ana. The victim is 20 years old.

The shooting occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Two suspects fled in different directions; one of them may have been on a bicycle.

One suspect was last seen running onto the school field at Sepulveda Elementary School at 1801 South Poplar Street in Santa Ana.

Sepulveda Elementary was locked down as a precaution. Mater Dei High School at 1202 West Edinger Avenue was also locked down.

Officers were searching Sepulveda Elementary classroom by classroom. Students were being escorted out to their parents at the front of the school.

One weapon and one of the suspects' clothing articles have been located.

Santa Ana Police, school police and Orange County Sheriff's Department personnel were searching the area of Bristol and Edinger.

Lockdowns were lifted at both schools by 3:30 p.m. after they were both cleared by authorities.

Two suspects were not found; both remain at large. They were both described as Hispanic males in their late teens. The shooting appeared to be gang-related, according to police.
