South Gate officer-involved shooting: Carjacking suspect killed
A suspected carjacker was killed Sunday morning in an officer-involved shooting in South Gate.

SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspected carjacker was killed Sunday morning in an officer-involved shooting in South Gate.

At about 4 a.m., the male suspect, who was in his late 30s, had attempted, but failed to carjack a person at a Jack in the Box restaurant in the 8900 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Shortly after, South Gate police arrived at the scene and the victim identified the suspect walking nearby. The suspect then ran from officers and failed again to steal another car on Annetta Avenue. He then ran into neighboring residential yards.

About an hour later, officers spotted the suspect in the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue with a handgun. He confronted officers, which resulted in the officer-involved shooting, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or carjacking victims were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were assisting the South Gate Police Department in investigating the incident.
