South LA clerk fatally stabbed by robbery suspect

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A clerk was stabbed and killed during a robbery at a doughnut shop in South Los Angeles Tuesday night.

Police said a man in his 30s entered the Louisiana Fried Chicken and Donuts shop on Broadway and Florence Avenue around 9:20 p.m.

"He acts like he wants to make a purchase. His real purpose is to rob the location," said Lt. Jeff Nolte with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Nolte said the suspect demanded money from the cash register and assaulted the victim, identified as 29-year-old Andrew Ung, the shop owner's son. The suspect then took off, and Ung ran after him. The victim was found suffering from a stab wound in the alley behind the restaurant.

Ung was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The suspect fled the scene on foot, going westbound on Florence Avenue.

"This is obviously really tragic for that family. This business has been here for some time. It not only impacts the family, but it's impacting the community. Many people in this neighborhood come to this location every day," said Nolte.

All the businesses located in the nearby strip mall remained closed Wednesday. A nearby marijuana dispensary posted a sign outside their door stating they shut down due to excessive crime.

"Due to excessive crime in this area, we will be closed until further notice," the sign read.

The LAPD's 77th Street Station will be hosting a "Stop the Violence" march Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the station located at 7600 Broadway Avenue.

The Normandie Church of Christ and Councilman Curren Price's office (CD9) are also co-hosting the march alongside police.

"We're a shattered community right now. Andy was well-known to the officers here, a well-known community figure," said LAPD Capt. Cory Palka. "We're going to march back up here with a couple-hundred of folks and just show our commitment to resolve this homicide and to resolve crime here in the 77th Street area."

The suspect was last seen wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and beanie.
