Stay aware of surroundings in tourist areas, expert advises

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- Tourists and locals are still hitting Southern California's popular destinations in big numbers despite the deadly terror attack in Nice, France.

Some, however, acknowledge they are on their guard.

"It's happening close and it's happening very frequently," said Jacquelyne Pelow, visiting from Toronto. "There's always that idea in the back of my mind, that it might happen."

Security expert Joe Petrillo said situational awareness is one key to keeping safe in crowded areas.

"Always have to look at 'where is my exit plan?' whether they're at the mall or at a pier or on the boardwalk at Venice," Petrillo said.

Venice and Santa Monica have both seen their share of tragedies. In 2013, an Italian tourist was killed and many injured after a man drove his car through the boardwalk. In 2003, 10 people were killed and dozens injured when an 83-year-old man drove through the crowd at the Santa Monica farmers market.

Petrillo noted that layers of barriers that have been added increase the protection to the public. Santa Monica, for example, added steel bars along the Promenade.

He added that it's important to think on your feet and move quickly if a danger is developing.
