EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was injured in a deputy-involved shooting in East Los Angeles early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. on the 5000 block of Olympic Boulevard. Deputies said shots were fired after a suspect produced a handgun.

"We were patrolling the area of Olympic Boulevard and Fraser Avenue. They went to contact a group of males when one of the males produced a handgun and a deputy-involved shooting occurred," said Sgt. Andrew Cruz with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Two deputies opened fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. He was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No deputies were injured.

Deputies say a perimeter was set up in the area after a second suspect ran from the scene. Three potential suspects were later detained, but authorities were still in the process of determining if one of them was the suspect who fled from deputies.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
