MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect who attacked a police officer was shot and killed in Moreno Valley Thursday, police said.
The officer-involved shooting happened in the area of Perris and Sunnymead boulevards just after 6 a.m. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities say the incident began around 3 a.m. when Moreno Valley police responded to a call of a mentally ill person assaulting a family member in the 25000 block of Fir Avenue. When officers arrived, the suspect attacked an officer and fled.
That officer was taken to an area hospital for moderate injuries.
Then around 6 a.m., police responded to a stabbing call in the area of Webster and Perris and found the victim. Within minutes, officers encountered the suspect near Perris and Sunnymead boulevards and determined that it was the same suspect from the prior incident.
The suspect was holding an unknown object and refused to drop it. When he advanced toward police, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The incident remains under investigation.
