VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) -- Police say a 1-year-old boy was stabbed to death by his father at a home in Ventura early Friday morning.
The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. on the 400 block of Crocker Avenue. The child's father, identified as Adrian Navarrete-Gonzalez, called 911 reporting that his child was dead, according to investigators.
The father was also suffering from stab wounds to the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive his injuries.
After an investigation, detectives believe Navarrete-Gonzalez was responsible for the toddler's death. Police say the father and the child's mother are estranged.
"He was the last one to be with the child while the child was alive. We have, at this point, no other information that's leading us in any other direction," said Commander Darin Schindler with the Ventura Police Department.
Authorities say once Navarrete-Gonzalez is discharged from the hospital, he will be booked at the Ventura County Jail.
Neighbors say the father, who is in his late 20s, lived at the home and had visitation rights to his son. The boy's mother did not live at the residence.
Between 10 to 12 people live in the home, according to neighbors. Those residents are said to be cooperating with authorities.
The investigation is ongoing.
