SAN DIEGO (KABC) -- A San Diego County sheriff's deputy was caught on cellphone video Tasering a 13-year-old boy who ran away from home.
The video shows the deputy ordering the teen to put his hands behind his back on Saturday in Fallbrook. Moments later, the deputy reaches for his Taser and the teen's legs start shaking. Witnesses yell at the deputy.
The 13-year-old's mother had called authorities after her son had run away for nearly two days, said Jan Caldwell with the sheriff's department.
The deputy tracked down the teen, who was hanging out with some other kids in a parking lot. Sheriff's officials said the boy refused to go home and became combative with the deputy.
The deputy then used his stun gun to get the boy under control. Witnesses accused the deputy of using excessive force.
"The officer punches him right here on the jaw and then he Tazers him two times, and then he's also choking him at the same time," the boy's friend Liandro Cardenas said.
On Monday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department defended the deputy's actions.
"I think, in this case, by himself, with six other people around, that he was unsure of what their actions were going to be. I think it was appropriate use of force," San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said.
Jonathan Daza, who captured the video, said he was shocked at what he was seeing.
I "grab my camera, tried to do it low key, because I was kind of afraid in a way," Daza said.
The teen was taken back home with his parents. He faces a felony charge of assault on a peace officer for allegedly biting the deputy in the arm.
The sheriff's department says the teen's mother apologized to them after learning of the confrontation.
An investigation is underway into the arrest and the deputy's actions.
