VIDEO: LAPD officer kicks suspect in head in 2014 South LA arrest

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Newly released video shows Richard Garcia and three other Los Angeles police officers violently arresting Clinton Alford. A kick from Garcia is just one of many blows that would lead to disciplinary action and much more.

After seeing the video, L.A. Police Chief Charlie Beck said he personally contacted the district attorney to take a look and possibly file criminal charges.

The video was withheld for nearly two years following the October 2014 incident in South L.A. The family saw it Monday for the first time.

"I just thank the good lord that they didn't kill my son," Alford's mother told the press. "He was on the ground defenseless."

Prosecutors charged Garcia with felony assault. This spring, Garcia entered a guilty plea in exchange for a lighter penalty: No jail, just community service. The felony can later be changed to a misdemeanor if he satisfies all terms of the court.

Alford was in jail on Monday awaiting trial for two separate cases. After release in an alleged robbery case, he was arrested the following year on multiple charges including pimping, unlawful sex with a minor, assault, kidnapping and human trafficking.

As for the officer, his lawyer said the video does not show the entire incident. The unedited version is under seal and for that reason, he can make no comment.

If convicted, Alford faces a potential term of life in prison. Meantime, his lawyer said she's going to push for a federal civil rights lawsuit.
