Vigil held for Muhammad Ali at LA mosque he helped build

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A prayer and candlelight vigil was held for boxing heavyweight legend Muhammad Ali at a mosque he helped build in Los Angeles Saturday night.

The world-famous boxer died Friday night at the age of 74 in a Scottsdale, Arizona hospital surrounded by his family.

News quickly spread of "The Greatest's" passing, and tributes poured in over social media from fans, celebrities, politicians and athletes. Flowers and items such as boxing gloves were placed near his Hollywood Walk of Fame star Saturday morning.

Ali's star is the only one placed above ground on a wall of the Hollywood and Highland complex. He said he did not want his name on the ground to have people walk over it.

The vigil was held at the Bilal Islamic Center, located at 4016 S. Central Ave.
