What happened to the 6 dogs that ran onto 710 Freeway after police chase?

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Six dogs are being cared for after they ran onto the 710 Freeway in Long Beach following a police chase Monday evening.

The three pit bull puppies, their mother and two other dogs ran onto the freeway after jumping out of a Mercedes Benz as the driver was surrendering to police.

The animals were in the car as the California Highway Patrol chased it from the 91 Freeway in Orange County to Long Beach. The pursuit ended on the south 710 Freeway near Pacific Coast Highway just before 10 p.m. after troopers performed a PIT maneuver.

The driver, identified by officials as 48-year-old Tiffini Tobe of Santa Ana, is facing evading charges.

All six dogs were safely retrieved by law enforcement officials and placed in the hands of Long Beach Animal Care Services. As for the dogs, the city is trying to figure who actually owns them.

"If it's the person who police have in custody, if it's somebody else, if there's microchip information or if somebody comes forward claiming to be the owner, we're going to do our best to determine who the legal owners are and try to return them back to their owner," Ted Stevens with Long Beach Animal Care Services said.

The puppies are about 4 months old and the three other dogs are adults.

Stevens said the dogs could be put up for adoption, it just depends on what happens when the owner is identified.

"Basically if the owner is identified and they determine and they let us know they don't want the dogs back, then they can sign them over to us and we'll make them available for adoption," Stevens explained.

Stevens said another possibility is if no one claims the dogs in the next few weeks, they'll be declared abandoned and put for adoption.
