National Dog Day: Animal adoption encouraged amid celebration of canines

Every dog has its day - an expression that's especially true every year on Aug. 26, when National Dog Day is celebrated.

National Dog Day was first commemorated in 2004 with the goal of encouraging people to adopt more pets.

More than 6 million dogs enter animal shelters every year, and 44 percent of U.S. households have a dog.

The top three most popular canines are Labrador retrievers, German shepherds and golden retrievers.

Americans spend about $307 per year on dog food and treats.
