A Huntington Park council member appointed two undocumented immigrants to be community leaders for city commissions Monday.

The appointments come while immigration continues to be a contentious issue across the country. Councilmember Jhonny Pineda chose Francisco Medina and Julian Zatarian to lead two separate commissions.

Zatarian will lead the parks and recreation commission while Medina will lead the health and education commission.

Both men did not meet requirements for President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act, but are eligible to serve on the city commissions. The service is considered volunteer work and the pair will not benefit financially from the city.
