MARINA DEL REY (KABC) -- A Los Angeles city councilman on Wednesday insisted the city did not issue any permits for a full-scale fireworks show that erupted around midnight off the coast of Marina del Rey, apparently as part of a birthday party thrown by Khloe Kardashian.
The midnight fireworks display, however, came as a loud wake-up call for thousands of people in and around Marina del Rey.
ABC7 reporter Elex Michaelson, who witnessed the display, said it was bigger than most 4th of July shows. He called it a "full scale production".
Los Angeles County sheriff's officials says the fireworks show went through the "appropriate U.S. Coast Guard review process" and that Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were notified.
LASD officials added that the department does not have jurisdiction to issue permits for the fireworks, because they took place about 100 feet west of the breakwater of Marina del Rey.
