LA Kings parade, rally draw thousands of fans to downtown
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of fans on Monday gathered in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the L.A. Kings' Stanley Cup win.
The championship parade started at noon at the intersection of Figueroa and 5th streets. It went down Figueroa Street and ended at the Staples Center. Players, coaches and the team mascot, Bailey, rode on double decker buses with the Stanley Cup. The parade was followed by a rally for fans inside the Staples Center.
Team captain Dustin Brown said he looked forward to seeing fans along the parade route.
"That's a special moment for every player that gets to do it -- this little ride that we get to go on after we win it," said Brown. "It's always fun to just see the response from the community and the city."
Some fans began staking out locations along the parade route as early as 4:30 a.m. to get a good view. As the team passed by during the parade, fans cheered and shouted, "Go Kings go!"
The Kings beat the New York Rangers Friday night in double overtime to reclaim the Stanley Cup. The team won its first championship ever in 2012.
Kings player Drew Doughty attributes the win to the teammates' chemistry on and off the ice.
"I think we have the best team both on the ice and the best team off the ice. We have a great group of guys. We have a ton of fun outside the rink. We hang out with each other all the time," said Doughty.
