ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Angels placed pitcher Matt Shoemaker on the bereavement list Wednesday after the death of his grandfather and recalled Nick Tropeano from Triple-A Salt Lake to start their series finale Thursday against Oakland.

Left-hander C.J. Wilson was scheduled to start Thursday but was pushed back to Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers because of stiffness in his elbow. Garrett Richards will start the opener of that series.

Shoemaker is tentatively penciled in to make his next start next Wednesday night at Oakland after Jered Weaver opens the series on an extra day's rest.

Tropeano has made four appearances in the major leagues, all starts last season. The 24-year-old right-hander was 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA but impressed manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher with his outings in spring training.

"First of all, he has really good stuff," Scioscia said. "Nick is a guy that has a sneaky fastball, good command in and out, and he's got really good secondary pitches -- his changeup and breaking ball. And he competed really well in the spring. So we're excited to give him the ball tomorrow."
