McCaffery rebukes eye-pokes query
The Iowa Hawkeyes blew out No. 17Maryland on Sunday, but the win wasn't enough to keep the questions regarding centerAdam Woodbury's string of eye pokes at bay.
In the postgame news conference after Iowa's 71-55 victory, Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery got testy with a reporter asking about Woodbury again getting whistled for the infraction.
"Next question. Ask an intelligent question," McCaffery said.
Woodbury was called for a flagrant foul late in the first half for poking Maryland freshman guard Melo Trimble in the eye.
Woodbury also poked a pair of Wisconsin players on Jan. 20, moves that ESPN commentator Dan Dakich memorably called "gutless."
When another reporter asked McCaffery why he thought that wasn't an intelligent question, he said "because I said so."
On the offensive end, Woodbury matched a career high with 16 points after Iowa (15-8, 6-4)opened the game on a 22-3 run and handed Maryland (19-5, 7-4) its third straight road loss -- all by double digits.
Trimble had 20 points to lead the Terrapins.
"They were really good. But I imagine we had a lot to do with it," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. "Turnovers. Shooting quick ... as a coach I've got to do a better job of having us prepared offensively."
