SAN FRANCISCO -- The New York Mets have called up Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned fellow outfielder Darrell Ceciliani to their top farm club.
Nieuwenhuis is set to start in left field Monday night against San Francisco.
He returns to the Mets after they traded him to the Los Angeles Angels for cash on May 27. In 10 games with the Angels, Nieuwenhuis batted .136 (3-for-22) with two doubles before getting designated for assignment on June 10.
Three days later, the Mets claimed Nieuwenhuis and sent him to the minors. He was hitting .293 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 15 games with the 51s.
Nieuwenhuis was on the Mets' opening-day roster and batted .079 in 27 games before he was designated for assignment May 19.
Ceciliani was hitting .206 with a homer, three RBIs and five stolen bases.
