USC proposes estimated $270-million renovation plan for LA Coliseum
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The University of Southern California unveiled an estimated $270-million plan to renovate and restore the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Thursday.
The renovation plan, which would be privately funded by USC Athletics, will include seat replacements, improved audio and video equipment, a new field and updated lighting, electrical and plumbing systems.
If approved by the Coliseum Commission, the project launch would begin in spring 2016, construction would start after the 2017 football season, and then be completed by 2019, right before the football season opener.
According to USC, the renovations would add an additional $70 million in investments into the stadium over the next 10 years in addition to the $100 million that is part of the university's lease agreement with the commission.
The full list of renovations include:
- Replacing every seat, which would reduce the seats from 93,607 to 77,500
- Installing handrails, adding aisles, widening seats and increasing leg room between sections
- Building a new structure on the south side of the stadium that includes suites, loge boxes, club seats, a new concourse and press box
- Restoration of the iconic peristyle to closely resemble the coliseum's original design
- Update to the venue's WiFi
- Improving audio and video, including the addition of two large screens on the east end of the stadium
- Adding new concession stands and improving existing ones, as well as updating entryways
- Replacing electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems as well as installing new lighting
- Installing a new field
In 2013, USC received approval from the commission and the California Science Center Board of Directors to allow a transaction between the university and the state to operate and renovate the stadium.
