CANOGA PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who wielded a machete was shot and killed by police in Canoga Park Saturday.

The shooting occurred in the 8100 block of De Soto Avenue after authorities received reports of a man in a gas mask armed with a machete in the neighborhood around 7 p.m.

Authorities said the incident appeared to stem from a family dispute inside a nearby home. One man dislocated his shoulder during the dispute, authorities said. He flagged police down and told them he'd been beaten.

"While speaking with that victim, the suspect exited the residence and he was armed with what the officers believed to be a machete," LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said.

Police said the suspect fled on foot and officers confronted him in an alley. An officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was struck by gunfire. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

Earlier information indicated the man may have been wearing a gas mask and had caused a gas leak in the residence, but authorities said they could not confirm those details.

The investigation was ongoing.
