GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect barricaded himself inside a Garden Grove police cruiser for hours and fired a round at officers before being arrested Tuesday night.

Authorities said the incident started around 10 p.m. near Brookhurst and Westminster avenues after receiving a request for help from a recovery center.

Officers arrived and conducted a psychiatric evaluation on the suspect and waited for an ambulance to take him to the hospital.

The suspect was placed in the back of a vehicle and had no weapons on him, authorities said. At some point, he gained access to an AR-15 rifle stowed in the car.

In a tweet, Garden Grove police said the suspect fired one shot from inside the vehicle, but no one was hurt.

A negotiator attempted to make contact with the suspect and surrounding apartments were evacuated as a safety precaution.

AIR7 HD was over the scene and two bearcats moved in to surround the vehicle.

After an hourslong standoff, the suspect was taken into custody around 12:35 a.m.
