LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The first heat wave of the summer arrives in Southern California this week, bringing triple-digit heat to many areas.
Temperatures will rise to the 90s and triple-digits when the heat wave peaks on Wednesday and Thursday.
An area of high pressure will sit right over the region on Wednesday and Thursday, and that sinking air compresses, making temperatures hotter and hotter.
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued from Wednesday at 10 a.m. through Thursday at 8 p.m. in the area from Palm Springs to Blythe. Other parts of the Inland Empire is under a heat advisory during the same time period.
Relief won't arrive until Friday, when temperatures begin to dip back down as the pressure weakens and the sea breeze moves back in heading into the weekend. However, there's already another heat wave in the forecast for next week.
Los Angeles and Orange counties Wednesday will see a high of 89 degrees and a low of 63. The high on Thursday is expected to hit 90.
The valleys and Inland Empire Wednesday will see a high of 100 degrees and a low of 60. On Thursday, the high is expected to remain 100 degrees. Temperatures will come down by the weekend, but it will still be hot.
Beaches Wednesday will see morning fog and afternoon sunshine, along with a high of 75 degrees and a low of 64. The high is expected to peak at 76 on Thursday.
The mountains Wednesday will see a high of 85 degrees and a low of 53. Similar conditions are expected Thursday.
Deserts Wednesday will see a high of 104 and a low of 70, with Palm Springs expected to hit a high of 117. Thursday will reach a high of 105 and a low of 71.
