CITY TERRACE, Calif. (KABC) -- A shooting involving Monterey Park police on Friday morning led to closure of both sides of the 10 Freeway in City Terrace for much of the day.
The shooting occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. near the Eastern Avenue overpass, which was also shut down as authorities conducted an investigation at the scene.
The shutdown backed up traffic for miles as drivers slowly were diverted off the freeway and onto surface streets. It lasted more than nine hours.
Police say the incident started just after 10 a.m. when Monterey Park officers tried to pull over a vehicle associated with a robbery that happened in the LAPD's Hollenbeck division several days ago.
The suspect fled and officers gave chase on the 10 Freeway. During the chase, officers say the suspect fired a weapon. The chase then ended up with a foot pursuit along the freeway and then an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was dead at the scene and a handgun was recovered.
Video from AIR7 HD showed law enforcement officers examining a white car on the otherwise deserted interstate.
The body of the unidentified suspect was covered with a sheet on a nearby onramp. A handgun was visible on the ground next to the body.
There were no reports of injuries to officers.
The westbound side of the freeway was reopened around 7:30 p.m. and the eastbound side reopened around 8:15 p.m.
Drivers were urged to use the 60 Freeway as an alternative route.
