It's a place people like to go this time of year to picnic, fish, and occasionally walk out onto the ice frozen over the lake.
Two days ago, that decision proved to be deadly for one man.
Sheriff's deputies say some children were walking out on the ice when they fell in.
Victorville resident Claro Claridad ventured out onto the ice to try to rescue them, but fell in too.
By the time rescue divers were able to get him out, he was dead.
"It's just sad that he was trying to rescue children and he passed because of that ," Victoria Coffey, a resident of the neighboring town of Phelan, said.
James and Victoria Coffey were at the lake today. They know how thin the ice can be.
"I wonder why anybody was letting their kids on the lake, frankly," Coffey said.
"Smaller lakes freeze over faster, but it's still never a good idea to go out on them, they never get thick enough. Every year someone will drive a car out on the lake. We've had cases of people pushing chairs out onto the lakes. Our deputies are constantly getting people off of frozen lakes. It's just not safe," said San Bernardino Sheriff's Department Sgt. Rick Ells.
Even though the person who died was trying to do the right thing, police say you should never go out onto the ice to rescue someone who fell through.
They say calling 911 is the best thing to do.
