Boyfriend shot, girlfriend still missing

LOS ANGELES They were a couple for a few short months; 21-year-old Melissa Sylvia Aguilar and Jose Manuel Zaragosa. But now Zaragosa is dead and Aguilar is missing.

"We just don't know," said Commander Pat Gannon, LAPD. "We just don't know where she is but we really fear for her safety. There have been no ransom demands."

LAPD Robbery Homicide is giving this missing person's case top priority after Zaragosa was found shot to death October 3 on the 4500 block of Clinton Street in Los Angeles.

Police later recovered Zaragosa's red Chevy Tahoe with Mexican plates near Balboa and Roscoe in the San Fernando Valley.

The couple was last seen together in Bakersfield September 30.

Authorities say they were supposed to meet some friends to shop for a car in the San Fernando Valley and never showed up.

Police don't know if Aguilar was a witness to the murder.

"We don't know if she was a witness to it or not but we need to find her," said Gannon. "Her family hasn't heard from her and we need to find her."

"Please I ask with all my heart to return my sister," pleaded Aguilar's sister who asked not to be identified out of fear for her own safety.

Police say Zaragosa, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, had a criminal record including arrests for drug dealing and drug possession.

Authorities say his illegal drug activities led to his kidnapping a year ago in Mexico. And that suggests the possibility that a Mexican drug a cartel may have been involved in his murder and her disappearance.

"That's not necessarily the case," said Gannon. "Could it be? Absolutely. Is it? I just don't know now."

Aguilar's sister says she is innocent and not involved in any illegal activity and she prays for her sister's safe return.

If you have any information where Aguilar might be or any information about this case, please give them a call at 1-877-LAPD-24-7. That's 1-877-527-3247
