Chefs square off at local restaurant

FLINT TOWNSHIP Several amateur chefs will duke it out tonight to determine which recipe is best and to take a shot at a big prize.

Bd's Mongolian Grill is on the hunt for that next great recipe. "There's the traditional, the wild, the outrageous, and then the pretty normal. We'll see who brings it tonight," Bd's Marketing Director Jill Foss said.

The Best Bowl Challenge wraps up tonight with five finalists going head to head. Over the last month, 150 aspiring chefs have made their bid for grill glory as they try to get their recipe permanently added to the menu at Bd's Miller Road location.

The criteria is simple. "Taste. It's got to be a unique recipe, it has to be easy to put together and we want a unique name," said Foss.

When it comes to memorable names, Fenton's Michelle Cole has it down with her Tight Tushie Tofu.

Laughs aside, the name says it all. "I wanted to get across that this is something healthy, and that you can still go out for dinner and meet your goals and stay in shape."

Flushing's Keith Harris says if you can get past the fat and skip the rice and tortilla, his old-school pepper steak is just as healthy. "This is about 15 years in the works. I've been tweaking it. There's been the basic recipe, but it's at its pinnacle, and it's as good as it's ever been."

If Keith has his way, a win tonight could punch his ticket to the big time. "I might be in Hell's Kitchen next year. If Gordon Ramsey could smell this through TV, he'd be here right now. He'll have to give me a call."

The competition behind the counter is as hot as the steam coming off the grill. While this is all for fun, everybody's still in it to win it.

"It doesn't get more heated than this or more opposite," competitor Michelle Cole said.

"When I saw the tofu coming out, I said this is on. This isn't a meal, this is a battle of cultures here," said Harris.

ABC12's Karen Gatlin will be one of the judges on hand tonight at Bd's. It all begins at 6 p.m.
