Employees of Archer Daniels Midland, or ADM, are back on the job tonight after one of the company's grain elevators at Miami and Oakdale in east Toledo caught fire earlier this week. Officials evacuated nearby residents and closed down several streets and businesses because of fears of a possible explosion. Luckily, that didn't happen because crews were able to punch holes in the silo and drain the grain. ADM will now try to sell the grain as livestock feed.
GM's Toledo Powertrain plant is scaling back on hours. Since General Motors is building fewer cars, Toledo workers on both the front- and rear-wheel drive lines are now on 4-day weeks.
Officials confirm at least 2 tornados hit Ohio yesterday. The National Weather Service said today a tornado with top winds of around 90 miles per hour touched parts of 3 counties south of Columbus, tore off parts of roofs and knocked over a semitrailer. Another tornado damaged barns and homes in Holmes County in northeast Ohio's Amish country. Also, teams in southeast Ohio could soon confirm 2 more tornados in Athens and in Meigs counties.
A driver was airlifted to a hospital today after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing in Wood County. Troopers say Rachelle Low, 23, of Maumee, fell asleep while heading east on State Route 18 in Brown Township at around 6 a.m. this morning. Officials say she went off the road and overturned. Low was flown to Mercy St. V's with non-life-threatening injuries. She was cited for not wearing a seatbelt and failure to control.
A helicopter carrying a film crew crashed on one of Colorado's highest mountains today. Authorities say the crew was filming a test run of a driverless Audi on Pikes Peak this morning when the chopper crashed about a mile below the summit. No word yet on the cause. 4 people were hurt. A medical helicopter took the pilot to a hospital.
There are new developments today in the serial stabbing investigation that involves a case right here in Toledo. A prosecutor in Flint, Michigan says he's filing more charges against Elias Abuelazam. Abuelazam is suspected of attacking more than a dozen men in the Flint area, Toledo, and Virginia. So far, he is only charged in the attempted murder of a 26-year-old Flint man. The Genesee County prosecutor plans to release details on more charges on Monday. The defense lawyer expects at least one murder charge against Abuelazam.
Police in Michigan say they've arrested the "Darth Vader" robber. Ferndale officers say Jamie Hernandez, 41, had tried to rob a convenience store with a butcher knife earlier this week while wearing a Darth Vader mask. Investigators say Hernandez admitted he got the mask from his kids. He's now charged with armed robbery.
It's not a debate, but Michigan gubernatorial candidates Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero answered questions at the same event today. Bernero and Snyder did not appear on the stage together at the West Michigan Policy Forum in Grand Rapids today, but they each answered questions on the economy, education, health care, and the state deficit.
The race to replace retiring Republican George Voinovich in is boiling down to the economy. Democrat Lee Fisher and Republican Rob Portman are both vying for the Ohio U.S. Senate seat. Fisher accused Portman's policies under the Bush administration as being part of what led to the economy's collapse. Portman counters that the Buckeye State lost 400,000 jobs while Fisher served as the state's economic development director.
It's a jaw-dropping twist in the acid attack that disfigured a Washington state woman. Bethany Storro had gotten letters of support from around the world when she claimed a woman had thrown acid in her face. Police now say she made up the whole story and actually threw acid in her own face! There is no word on why she made up the story. Prosecutors will now decide if they'll press charges.
The number of people living in poverty is startling, almost 44 million Americans, or one in seven. The local numbers are even more shocking. Locally the number of people living in poverty has soared above the national average. It's a trend the organization "1 Matters" hopes to change. 1 Matters will hold its "Tent City" event, providing food, clothing, and medical care to those in need. This year a walk is being added to the event. Tent City takes place October 29 through October 31.
Ohio authorities are investigating possible food stamp fraud in Toledo. One case involves "Our Time" carryout on Dorr Street, where police charged Harjit Multani, 44, of Toledo. The other incident involves "Wag's Carryout" on Steadman. Abdul Fayad, 52, of Detroit and Khalil Bazzi, 33, of Dearborn have been charged. All the suspects' charges include illegal use of food stamps and telecommunications fraud.
As several Toledo neighborhoods continue to deal with illegal dumping, the city is stepping up to help them. Tomorrow the city will host its last free dump day. The goal is to provide citizens an alternative to illegally dumping their waste items. It runs tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass Community Center on Indiana Avenue.
