Santa Ana Man Convicted for Fatal DUI Crash

SANTA ANA, Calif. Miranda faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison when he's sentenced Oct. 12. He would be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in prison.

Miranda was driving under the influence of alcohol southbound on Newhope Street in Santa Ana with two female passengers. Investigators say he made an unsafe left turn across on-coming traffic.

Nguyen Tran, 36, who was driving north on Newhope Street was unable to stop and collided with Miranda's pickup truck.

During the collision, Miranda's truck went up the curb and hit Francisco Aquino, 44. Miranda fled the scene, leaving his two passengers in the pickup truck.

Officers at the scene found beer containers in the bed of the truck.

And authorities said Miranda's blood-alcohol leveel was 0.23 an hour after the crash, which is almost four times the legal limit.

Orange County Deputy District Attorney Jason Baez argued Miranda should have known better because of his three prior DUI convictions in 1995, 1997 and 2004.
