Demand-based parking fees to start in San Francisco

April 18, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
Demand-based parking fees are hitting San Francisco this week as part of a two-year federally funded experiment called, SFpark.

Sensors installed at parking spaces will track in real time where parking is available. That data is then uploaded to signs and smartphone applications.

The price of high demand parking spaces will go up, while other spaces will decrease in cost.

Officials hope this pilot program will reduce congestion and cut back on emissions.
