Olympics gymnastic coach accused of abuse resigns

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.

Don Peters, who led the U.S. women's team to a record eight medals in the 1984 Olympics, reportedly resigned from SCATS Gymnastics in Huntington Beach.

His resignation comes after an Orange County Register investigation last month alleging sexual and physical abuse involving over a dozen underage gymnasts during the 1980s.

Peters cannot be prosecuted on the alleged incidents because the statute of limitations has expired.

A Nov. 11 hearing has been scheduled in Indianapolis by gymnastics' national governing body to decide whether Peters should be banned from the sport.

Two other U.S. gymnastics coaches, Doug Boger and Michael Zapp, have either been dismissed or terminated from coaching roles after allegations of sexual and physical abuse surfaced in newspaper.
